Hey, everybody!
We’re talking careers today, as they are suddenly in the big picture. Eric is currently embarking on his career as an engineer. I am about to end my career as a student. Careers, careers, careers.
I’m currently in a class called “Personal and Family Finance”, which is comprised of approximately 200 girls and 6 boys. This is pretty much the exact opposite of all of my classes in the College of Agriculture. By the way, I’m a Community Communications and Leadership Development major, in case you were wondering. That’s basically fancy talk for “I don’t know what to do.”
Back to Personal and Family Finance. While the material in the class is really useful (how to set up a bank account, how to calculate compound interest, etc.), the class itself is horribly boring. I suppose this is partially because I did the assigned reading, only to find that the professor just makes powerpoint slides repeating the readings, word for word. Good for everyone who didn’t buy the book. Lame for me, the girl who shelled out $130.
Anywho, today we talked about career planning. I’ve been thinking a lot about my career lately, as I am going to graduate from college in just 15 weeks (not that I’m counting), and I will eventually need to get a big kid job. Now, I’ve always joked that I plan on retiring after graduation (and don’t worry, Dad, I am just joking. Sort of.), but I know that I will actually need to work before that happens. So what am I going to do with my life?
Well, while we discussed the oh-so-exciting differences between a “job” and a “career”, I got to work on a little list of my own. What follows is a compilation of my career possibilities.
Any further career suggestions will be gladly accepted. Please feel free to use our comment section.
For now, I’ll get to work on my mad scientist lab coat. Perhaps my polka-dotted bathrobe will do the trick.

Can we have a coffee shop that specializes in Civil War reenactments and science experiments on the weekends?

Ally! I saw your blog on facebook (this is your former favorite AP English teacher by the way:) and I had to comment on this one. I can remember like yesterday being in your exact place (just married and trying to map out my life…ha!) Just remember that whatever you choose it will probably change again (but farmer or yoga instructor sounds fun). I was a communications major too until I switched to education the LAST semester of my senior year! Craziness. But seriously, I just wanted to say hello and wish you well on whatever “career” you choose. Maybe add “writer” to your list because you have a knack for that too (I still have your hilarious satirical essay that I share with my seniors each year when I give that assignment). Hope all is well! Take care!

Thanks, Mrs. Moulder! I was so excited to see your comment! Who knows what I’ll end up doing with my life, but I’m sure it will be eventful! I checked out your family blog and I love it! Drew is absolutely adorable and he is so blessed to have such a loving family!

Have you contemplated underwater basket weaving? I hear there’s lots of money to be made with such a career.

Gertrude,
I’ve loved reading your blog! You and Eric are hilarious!
While I have to go an extra semester, I have noooo idea what I want to do with my life either. I would be perfectly content being a stay at home mom or cupcake decorator the rest of my life. But alas, I don’t think that’s going to pan out. lol. So I don’t have any good advice for you, but I just wanted to let you know that you’re not the only person that’s confused. 🙂
Aaaaand I wish we lived closer. I haven’t seen you in quite some time. 🙁

Myrtle, perhaps we can band together and make it acceptable to be stay at home moms/cupcake decorators straight out of college (and without kids). Good luck with your life planning! Haha!

You would be a writer is what you should be. You are fantastic. I love reading your stuff. I am enjoy it and laugh really hard, especially from this one. ps I took that same class with Kelly, it was useful material, yet extremely boring.
