I feel as though our lives have been a bit random lately. Here’s a random post to go along with our random lives.
Last weekend, we went back home to celebrate my Mom’s birthday and my college graduation. I made my mom a birthday cake. Now, we all know that cake decorating is not my thing. But I really thought that maybe this would be the day that I would suddenly be really awesome. I picked out my cake inspiration. (By the way, i am baker is one of my absolute favorite blogs. She is incredibly talented and definitely has the whole decorating thing down to an art.) Anywho, I picked out this hydrangea cake design, and after reading how impossible it would be to mess up, I completely destroyed it. It looked horrible. But the great thing about frosting is that you can just smooth everything out and start over again. And again. And again.
Eventually, I waved my white flag of surrender and decided to try another cake decoration technique, the rose cake. I’m almost embarrassed to show you what this cake was supposed to look like. Scratch the ‘almost.’ I am horribly embarrassed to show you what this cake was supposed to look like. But you really should see how beautiful it could have been. Perhaps I can blame my cake decorating shortcomings on a lack of the correct tools. I didn’t have the correct sized frosting tip. So I’ll say it could have been awesome, had I been properly equipped.
Anywho, here’s the cake I made. My roses ended up looking more like swirls. And I used some strawberries to cover up the biggest flaws. And now I’m determined to improve my cake decorating. Expect to see more cakes and cupcakes in the near future.
Next up on the random list, I had the day off yesterday, so I met Eric downtown for lunch. We’ve been dying to try out Wine + Market, which is this super cute little shop on Second Street. They sell a bunch of local stuff, like bread, cheese, coffee, and flour, along with serving lunch. After reading this blog post about Wine + Market, I had really high expectations for the food. Unfortunately, we were both a little disappointed. The food was alright, but nothing to write home about. I did appreciate their beverage choices though. Ale8 for Eric and chocolate milk for me. Yum. Still, it was a pretty expensive lunch, coming in around $21, which could get us a pretty awesome dinner at several other restaurants. Still, it’s a super cute place that I would visit again, probably just to pick up some local ingredients.
Alright, and now for the best part of the blog post. Ice cream! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: We love our ice cream maker. This time around, we made cookies and cream. We may or may not have indulged in some of this right after dinner, and again during the season finale of Parks and Recreation. But we ate salad for dinner, so I’ll say it all evened out. Right?
I also solidified my position as the most awesome wife ever by giving Eric the gift of Scrabble. Eric loves Scrabble and has been playing online for a few weeks. I’m really terrible at the game, but I figured it was something that Eric and I could do together, so I bought him his very own Scrabble board. So far, he has beaten me by over 100 points both times we’ve played, but I think I’m getting a little better. We started a game last night but had to go to sleep before we finished, so we played Scrabble over breakfast this morning. It was kind of ridiculous, but was probably a good brain warm-up for the day. Nothing like word games at 5:45 am.
And there you have it. Some random things from a random week.

So glad you two are playing Scrabble!! I tried for years to get family members to play with me but no one ever wanted to. Guess it’s a game one takes up when they get out into the real world!! Love you guys!!

Your cake looked great (until the comparison). You can call it your wilted rose cake. Always delicious when they don’t look so great–is our motto.
