Sometimes, you just need chocolate. For me, this is an everyday occurrence. I wish I could stop myself from eating dessert, but I really can’t. I just feel like every meal needs to end with something sweet.
So here’s your ‘something sweet’ fix for the month. Or maybe the year. Because that’s how unhealthy it is. If you are counting your calories, please just stop reading here. How many people can count to a billion, anyway?
I’ve said this before, but I love Picky Palate. I don’t know if it’s because her photos are so beautiful, or because she loves chocolate as much as I do, or because we have the same color Kitchen-Aid Mixer. But man, can that girl come up with some awesome desserts. So, I was checking out her blog (as I do every day), and saw a recipe that I knew I had to make. Gooey Cookies and Cream Double Chocolate Cake Bars. Oh. My. Goodness. I quickly calculated that I will never be able to burn these babies off, no matter how much I exercise, but I proceeded to make them anyway.
Here’s the thing. I think there’s something wrong with our oven. You see, it just doesn’t seem to get as hot as it should. And, as a result, things don’t seem to bake how they are supposed to. But in this case, I think it turned out kind of awesome. My Gooey Cookies and Cream Double Chocolate Cake Bars didn’t turn out to be bars at all. Only the outer edges of the dessert actually became solid, while the middle was a big, incredibly gooey mess of chocolate that could only be scooped out with a spoon. That being said, if you’re going to try this recipe at home, I wouldn’t bake it all the way through. Some things are just better messy.
But you should absolutely serve this with a huge portion of milk.
Gooey Cookies and Cream Double Chocolate Cake Bars (except mine was more like a molten cake)
from Picky Palate
1 Devil’s Food cake mix
1 stick butter, softened
1 egg
14 Oreos, broken into pieces (I can’t say I only used 14 Oreos)
14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips (I used miniature chocolate chips to make it a little less overwhelming)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with foil. Spray with nonstick cooking spray.
Combine cake mix, butter, and egg. Press into baking pan.
Top with broken Oreos.
Pour sweetened condensed milk over the cookies. Top with chocolate chips.
Bake for 20-25 minutes (or less, if you want them Ringer-style). Enjoy!
I recommend small servings. And lots and lots of milk. Happy over-indulgence!

Yes. Yes. Yes. I saw this recipe somehwere and fell in love as well. But haven’t ventured to make it. (You think something-sweet-after-meals dates back to coffee-cake-after-hours?)

I think we can blame everything on the coffee cake.
