One of the great things about living downtown is the number of places to eat within walking distance. We’ve been doing a lot of walking lately, whether it’s to find a place to eat or to just get some exercise and fresh air. And this has resulted in both of us currently sitting on the edge of the bathtub, soaking our poor feet in hot bubble bath water. It’s a pretty funny sight. I made the mistake of wearing shoes that aren’t made for walking this morning. My feet sting.
Anywho, Eric and I have never been ones to eat out often, but since we’re living in a new place, surrounded by restaurants, we figured we should indulge a little. There’s this cute little place a few blocks away called Stella’s. We’ve heard great things about it, but had never been there before, so we walked there after church this morning (plus, we had a Groupon!). It was so cute and delicious! And they use as much local food as they can. After perusing the menu, we discovered that our CSA (Three Springs Farm) supplies their vegetables! We ate outside on the shaded patio (which wasn’t too hot, considering it was 80 degrees outside), and enjoyed some local brunch food. Eric ordered scrambled eggs, bacon, and buttermilk biscuits, while I had cheesy egg strata, bacon, and yogurt with fruit and granola. Yum. It’s been so long since either of us have eaten real bacon (I’ve been trying to convince Eric that low sodium turkey bacon is just as tasty as the real thing), and it was practically a religious experience. Goodness, gracious. That bacon was good. We also had mimosas, which were deliciously crisp and refreshing in the heat. We’ll definitely be visiting Stella’s again.
After brunch, we took a walk down Short Street (another great, quiet street lined with historic homes) and ended up at Shorty’s, a super cool urban grocery store (thanks to Bryant for telling us about this place). I have no idea what used to be in that building, but I kind of think it must have been a bank. There is a huge vault door that opens up into the refrigerated beverage and frozen foods section of the store. It’s kind of crazy and awesome. Anywho, I’m really excited about having a place nearby that sells the basic things that we would normally have to drive to Kroger to find.
Go explore your neighborhood! I bet it’s cooler than you think!

Stellas is great! We went for lunch sometime back in the fall when Daniel’s sister and her husband were visiting! Their cheese grits are AMAZING! And I think I got some lentil soup, which was AMAZING as well! AND- I think I saw you guys on Main Street the other night as I was coming home from work, around 8:30 pm? I would have honked… next time you see a blue Honda Fit honking and waving wildly, it’s me!
