One small step for man, one huge leap toward domesticity.
I can do a lot of things, but I cannot sew. I can clean. I can cook. I can bake. I can eat more than Brent White (it really did happen once). But sewing, along with almost anything else crafty, has always been outside of my reach. Until now.
I’ve really wanted to get some throw pillows to liven up our living room. Everything in our apartment, from the walls to the floors to the furniture is some shade of creamy brown. I’m a huge fan of neutral colors, but we need a little punch in here. I started shopping for throw pillows, but after seeing how ridiculously expensive they are, I kind of gave up hope. Then my sister, Amanda, who is super crafty and can seriously make anything, suggested making my own throw pillow covers. I believe my first reaction was laughter. You see, everyone in my family knows that Amanda has all of the talent in that department. But Amanda was certain that she could teach me how to use the sewing machine, so we took a trip to JoAnn’s and picked up some fabric.
And then it was sewing time. There’s something terribly intimidating about a sewing machine. It’s loud. There’s a needle. And for some reason, you’re supposed to put your hands in the vicinity of the needle. Terrifying.
But with my sister’s careful guidance, I cut and sewed three pillow cases. I am woman.
And the coolest part is that the pillowcases are removable, so I can just toss them in the laundry. Hooray for simplicity!
And while we’re showing photos, here’s a little peek at our living room. We finally hung some things on the wall this morning, so it’s starting to look more like home.
Hooray for nesting. There are many more projects in our future, including making the spare bedroom a usable space. It’s currently housing everything that doesn’t have a spot anywhere else (a.k.a. it’s a huge disaster).
