(Friday, September 30)
We could not have asked for better weather for our first day of vacation in the Pacific Northwest. We arrived in Seattle this afternoon, welcomed by 65 degree temperatures and sunny skies. Perfect for our first walk around the city. But before we could start exploring, we took advantage of the awesome public transportation that runs from the airport to downtown Seattle, where we are staying. For only $2.75 each, we hopped on The Light Link Rail and rode through the skies and the streets to reach downtown, where we walked a few blocks to our hotel. Unfortunately, these blocks were all uphill, which was a bit of a workout while hauling heavy suitcases (further proof that I need to learn to pack lighter).
After dropping our stuff off, we ventured out on the town, wandering the crowded streets of Seattle. Wow. This city is so much bigger than I remembered. And there are so many people! It’s such a crazy change from Lexington, where people don’t really hang out downtown. We walked around a few stores and then decided that we needed to eat dinner (it was only 4:30 in Seattle, but our stomachs were definitely on eastern time). We decided to try a seafood restaurant, since we’re in the land of fresh fish. What a great choice! We dined at the Fisherman’s Restaurant, which is right on the Puget Sound. It’s built to look like a boat on the inside, with views of the water. Oh my goodness. It was so beautiful! The great thing about Seattle is that you have views of the water AND the mountains at the same time! And the food, oh, the food. I had New England clam chowder (I know, wrong coast…) in a bread bowl. I never wanted it to end. I’m definitely going to have to try to make this at home myself.
After dinner, we were in need of dessert, so we headed to the Chocolate Box (a favorite from my Sambica days). It did not disappoint. A whole store built around dessert is the place for me, my friends. Eric enjoyed some non-chocolate ice cream, while I had a rockslide brownie, which is a brownie topped with pecans, caramel, and more brownie bites. Yum.
We’re retiring early tonight after only getting 3 1/2 hours of sleep in the past 40 hours. Yikes. Here’s hoping we can rest up before tomorrow’s adventures!
