It’s Olympic season! I must say that Olympic season is the greatest season of all (well, second to Christmas, I suppose). It’s a season to celebrate the triumph of the human body. It’s a season for the whole world to come together to enjoy competition. It’s a season to cry at inspirational Olympic commercials. And, of course, it’s a season for a party of Olympic proportions.
Here in the Ringer homestead, we welcomed the London Olympics with food, games, and gold medals.
I would like to note that we bought our Olympic decor at post-4th of July clearance sales. This included an American flag dish towel, flag pinwheels, flag paper plates and napkins, and bowls with stars and stripes. Hooray for the summer Olympics starting after the 4th of July!
As far as food goes, we didn’t go too wild with themed dishes. We had pizza (America? Italy?), chips and salsa (Mexico?), and fruit skewers (somewhere tropical?). And for dessert, Shelly brought Banoffee Pie, a traditional English dish. And I made blueberry cake donuts (from scratch!), which we topped with ice cream and strawberries for a red, white, and blue dessert. This is a dish we call “The Chad”, after our friend who came up with the incredible idea. And in case you were wondering, it was really awesome.
We played four Olympic games while watching the opening ceremonies, not necessarily inspired by real Olympic games:
1. Shooting. We used an airsoft gun to shoot targets. We had to rush through this one a bit because a huge storm was brewing. I’ll blame the intense wind for my horrible shot.
2. Name Your Country. This may or may not have been inspired by The Office (not The Office Olympics episode, strangely enough). Remember that episode where everyone has an ethnicity taped to their foreheads, and they are trying to figure out what they are? It’s hilarious. We played that game with countries taped to our back. We had to guess which country we were based on how people were talking to us.
3. Olympic Art. We used toilet paper tubes and paint to make art using the Olympic ring colors: red, blue, black, yellow, and green. After displaying our art for all to see, we voted on our favorites.
4. Kentucky Toss. We put a map of Kentucky on the ground and tossed sticky tack at different cities. Whoever got closest to their destination won.
After our games were complete, we had an Olympic medal ceremony, where everyone received medals in their events. Our fancy medals were made from Dove chocolate wrappers and twine. The nice thing about using Dove wrappers is that you get a lovely inspirational quote along with your win.
Enjoy the Olympics!
