In an effort to fill up on as much good food and as much family as possible during our time in Kentucky and Ohio, we met my parents in the middle of Ohio on Sunday afternoon. They recently moved to Michigan, and we hadn’t seen them since my sister’s wedding in January, so we were all willing to drive a few hours to meet for a meal.
We met my parents in Findlay, Ohio for lunch, followed by some ice cream at Dietsch Brothers (mostly because it was recently named one of the top 10 ice cream spots in America by Trip Advisor). I realized this is the longest I’ve ever gone without seeing my parents, and it was so good to see them and catch up. I miss them a lot.
My apologies for the lackluster photo, but there weren’t many great backdrops in the gravel parking lot. And it was 90-something degrees. That’s my excuse for everything in the summer.
Today, as we traveled back to the airport in Cincinnati, we stopped for lunch at Eli’s BBQ. We ate there with Brendan and Becky last summer before we moved away, and I remember it being really tasty, but it about knocked my socks off today (figuratively speaking of course, as no one should wear socks in 95-degree weather).
Eli’s is BBQ as it should be: served in an old building with few frills. It’s the kind of place where I was embarrassed to pull out my camera to take photos (but do I ever let that stop me? No.) because it seemed way too touristy a thing to do. There’s one sauce, a few beverage choices (although do you need another option when Ale8 is on the menu?), and meat that’s been cooking for hours. This pulled pork sandwich was probably the best I’ve ever had. I really didn’t know what to do with myself. Except exclaim over and over again, “I want to eat this forever.”
While savoring our sandwiches, we put serious thought into moving to Cincinnati just for Eli’s BBQ. Crazy? Probably.
